Infant through 5th Grade

What We Do and Why

At First Covenant Church, children are important! We seek to be an intergenerational church that welcomes all ages to our church and strives to live out our vision to love God and to love our neighbor together. We know that children our created in the image of God and long to be nurtured in their life of faith. We are intentional about investing in the lives of our children and walking with them as their relationship with Christ grows.

During the Worship Service

Children learn a lot through imitation, so it is important for our kids to be present during the worship service. They learn through the experience of music, prayers, scripture reading, even the offering! As they spend time with their friends and families in worship, children learn what it means to follow Christ through participation in the local church.

We want kids to understand what we are doing during worship and be able to engage in age appropriate ways. At the back of the sanctuary, we have a table filled with resources for children to use during the service- from books to activity guides to coloring pages, even chenille sticks to shape and form! Stop by each Sunday to see what tools we have to help our kids engage with God during the worship service.

We provide childcare on Sunday mornings for ages 6 weeks through 30 months in our nursery. Our nursery is staffed with loving and trained people. Both volunteers and paid staff have participated in an Abuse Prevention Training and a thorough background check.

When parents drop off their child, they should check in at the Check-In Station and print a label. Our Check-In Station can be found at the top of our main stairs just outside the sanctuary. Each parent will also receive a pager. We will use the pager to notify parents to return to the nursery.

You can register your child online by clicking here or by visiting our Children’s Check-In Station on Sunday morning. Please bring diapers, wipes, and any food or drink your infant might need during their time in the nursery. We do not provide any food for infants in the nursery.

Childcare is available 15 minutes prior to and during the worship service for infants and toddlers in Room 204.

Children’s Worship

When the sermon begins, kids ages 3 years through 2nd grade are invited to preschool worship in Rooms 207 and 205. During this time, our kids will learn the language of faith and how to “be still and know God.”  We use a storytelling method called Godly Play to guide the children as they interact with scripture. This method relies on the Holy Spirit to speak to each of us as we hear the word of God. After the story is presented in our circle time, we ask the kids these questions:

  • I wonder what the most important part of this story is…
  • I wonder what part of the story we could leave out and still have all we need…
  • I wonder where you see yourself in this story…
  • I wonder which part of the story you liked best…

After the circle time, kids are given lots of options to respond to the story through art, dress up, pretend play, hands-on learning or books. Our leaders bring the children back to the sanctuary during the last song.

As your child ages out of the nursery, talk to Pastor Mary about helping your child transition into Children’s Worship. Here are a few things to help you know when your child is ready for Children’s Worship- (coming soon)

You can register your child online by clicking here or by visiting our Children’s Check-In Station on Sunday morning. Please check in at our Children’s Check- In Station to print your child’s name badge each week.

Children’s Covenant Groups

At First Covenant, the primary way we foster Spiritual Formation is through our Covenant Groups. We offer groups for all ages. On Sundays and Wednesdays, we gather our kids into age appropriate groups so they can learn about God and grow together.  We follow the same schedule as our adult Covenant Groups. Children’s Christian Formation Team

We have a fabulous team of volunteers who help plan and shape the children’s ministry at FCC. The Children’s Christian Formation Team has a mission to supplement the family’s role in nurturing spiritual formation in each child. We want to partner with families at FCC to help equip and nurture faith development of kids and their families.

For more information on children’s ministry, please contact any of our members of the CCFT or Pastor Mary Peterson.
